Note on Blogroll

I wanted to make a note about the links I added on the right hand side. First off, as far as the author’s go I have not actually read a single one of their novels. This isn’t because their novels aren't good, or not my style, but because, in all honesty, I have not bought a new novel in a few years. I know, a budding novelist who hasn’t bought a new novel in years, shocking!

The reason for this is many-fold but the primary reason is lack of free time. About two years ago my first child was born and that started to eat into my free time. Then came going back to school, then came work, then came our second child, more school… etc. Really in order to read I would have to cut something else out of my life. I only sleep 4 to 5 hours a day, so I can’t cut sleep out. I have to do my homework to get my degree, because let’s face it, even if I do get my novel picked up, which isn’t likely, it won’t get published for a few years, so I need to have an income. So currently I don’t read novels because I don't have the time, when I read it is for school.

Having said all that, the writers and agents on the blogroll have excellent resources on their sites. They have given me a lot of information and I believe have allowed me to keep my expectations in check.

First!

Ok, what is this about? Well I am in the process of writing my first novel and to be totally honest there is really no one I can talk to about it. I am sure if I was writing some historical romance my wife would be enthralled and would discuss it, but I am writing what I have deemed an Urban Sci-fi story. So I am talking to the metaphorical wall by writing here, I don’t expect anyone to read this, not yet at least. Currently I am at the beginning of the process in my manuscript and I am coming to grips with my shortcomings as a writer.

One of the biggest hurdles I am encountering is that I have never written dialog before and am having trouble getting it on paper. To solve this I have reread some of the novels that I really enjoy and am trying to figure out what I like so much about their style. Thus far I have written a short dialog scene, only a few lines, and I really don’t like the way it turned out. I have a large scene coming up between an antagonist and his superior that lays a bit of back-story and lets the reader in on the antagonist’s motivation that I want to do as dialog, I am nervous about this so am doing research.

Another hurdle I am running into is the process in which I write. I don’t have a degree in English, I am a business major, and the largest paper I have ever written is 15 pages. The method I use to write is to scribe roughly a paragraph on paper then go back and edit it, then put another paragraph down, then edit the first two paragraph, and so on. This has led me to have 2 pages after two weeks of writing. I really have to get the story down on paper then worry about editing, but it is hard for me.

So if anyone reads this I appreciate the encouragement or the critiquing on my writing style. I don’t know if I will put a portion of my novel up on the site yet, more than likely I will consider it after it is written and I send queries off.
