First!

Ok, what is this about? Well I am in the process of writing my first novel and to be totally honest there is really no one I can talk to about it. I am sure if I was writing some historical romance my wife would be enthralled and would discuss it, but I am writing what I have deemed an Urban Sci-fi story. So I am talking to the metaphorical wall by writing here, I don’t expect anyone to read this, not yet at least. Currently I am at the beginning of the process in my manuscript and I am coming to grips with my shortcomings as a writer.

One of the biggest hurdles I am encountering is that I have never written dialog before and am having trouble getting it on paper. To solve this I have reread some of the novels that I really enjoy and am trying to figure out what I like so much about their style. Thus far I have written a short dialog scene, only a few lines, and I really don’t like the way it turned out. I have a large scene coming up between an antagonist and his superior that lays a bit of back-story and lets the reader in on the antagonist’s motivation that I want to do as dialog, I am nervous about this so am doing research.

Another hurdle I am running into is the process in which I write. I don’t have a degree in English, I am a business major, and the largest paper I have ever written is 15 pages. The method I use to write is to scribe roughly a paragraph on paper then go back and edit it, then put another paragraph down, then edit the first two paragraph, and so on. This has led me to have 2 pages after two weeks of writing. I really have to get the story down on paper then worry about editing, but it is hard for me.

So if anyone reads this I appreciate the encouragement or the critiquing on my writing style. I don’t know if I will put a portion of my novel up on the site yet, more than likely I will consider it after it is written and I send queries off.
